Debut exhibition of icons - January 7, 2008
The region of Veliko Tarnovo not in vain boasts with its icon-painters, studied and worked here and in the country, carried over the time the tradition and innovation in the iconography. In her debut exhibition, the author Tanya Peneva introduces us to her art work, presenting her skills in wood-carving, icon-painting and wall-painting.
In compositional, as well as in color relation, the author follows the requirements of the Orthodox Church painting, and she skillfully combines them with her own sense of shape and color. In front of us are the works of a young iconographer, who presents us not only the traditional iconic work, but the symbiosis between wood-carving and icon.
The characteristic technique of icon depiction - soft moulded body parts, narrow and elongated noses, eyes wide open, little lips, precision in the construction of the decorative elements on the armor, clothes, Gospels - all this outlines the unique style of the iconographer Tanya Peneva who creates author’s icons and murals. These elements also exist in the frescoes of the Chapel of St. Elijah in the village of Izvor, Burgas region and the Chapel of Saint John of Rila in Pomorie, which were also wall-painted by Tanya Peneva.
I dare say that in front of us stands a very promising young author, which work will inspire our faith and hope for years to come.
From the speech of Ivan Alexandrov – manager of P. R. Slaveikov Library in Veliko Tarnovo.
