The word "icon" is of Greek origin and literally translated means an image or portrait. The Church teaches that the icon is a direct consequence of the Incarnation of the God. While in the Old Testament, God appears only through words, then in the New Testament, He also appearsis through image, i.e.the Invisible becomes visible and displayed.
By wall-paintings and icons in Orthodox churches, iconographers paint the word of God, so that it becomes accessible to those who can not read it. Each icon or mural is being created for the glory of God and His saints.
